> Hong Kong

My first impression of Hong Kong was not the best. The traffic was unbearable; I didn't think I would ever get to my hotel. Once I checked in and had a shower the tides began to change. What amazed me about the city was how many taxis and double-decker busses there were.

The first thing on my agenda for Friday was to try and buy a Hong Kong Disneyland ticket. To do this I had to take the subway to Hong Kong Station and wait in line at the Disneyland ticket booth. I really didn't think I would be able to get a ticket; the park had only been open for 4 days to date. As luck would have it there were plenty of tickets available. The next thing on my mind was dinner. I tried to find a place to eat around Hong Kong Station but couldn't find anything to my liking. I took the Star Ferry back to Kowloon and walked around the Tsim Sha Tsui area. This is the tourist area of Hong Kong and also the area you come to when you step off the Star Ferry. I ended up eating at Chinese restaurant where I had a sampling of different kinds of meat. After this I was off to the Temple Street Market.

One thing I liked about Hong Kong was how easy it was to get around. I swear I didn't get lost once. The Temple Street Night Market is a huge market area that is open from 7-12 every night. I would say 40% of the goods were souvenirs and the other 60% were crap you could buy anywhere. Two great finds were a Hello Kitty Uno pack and a dancing Coke bottle. When I took the Coke bottle back to my hotel it wouldn't dance, so I took it back for a replacement on Saturday night. The market had a really good atmosphere to it. The market stalls ran through the middle of the street while on the side were bars and restaurants. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

On Saturday I took a tour of the city that ran from 8:30-2:30. I traveled with a group of about 20 people in a tour bus that took us to various sights around the city. To find out about the sights just click on a button at the top of the page. After the tour I went back to the hotel, took a rest and then headed back to the Temple Street Night Market.

Sunday was Disneyland day. In Korea there is a phrase called "disneylan?" which means "Do you want to die?" I always think it's funny when I hear it. I didn't click into the fact I would actually be going to Disneyland until that morning. I had planned all along to go to Macau; Disneyland was a last minute change of plans. Anyway's, I had a good time and I'm glad I chose to go. To read more about my adventures at Disneyland as well as to see the pictures click the button at the top of the page.

I spent my last few hours in Hong Kong walking the streets around my hotel. I got to the airport on time, however my flight was delayed by 30 minutes. This had the potential to cause some problems. If I missed my train in Seoul I would have to spend the night at the train station. As soon as I got off the plane I ran (check the security cameras) to the Immigration area. I was able to get my bag in good time and was fortunate enough to catch a bus just as it was about to leave. I got to the train station 10 minutes before my train left. Few!
